Are you ‘Winter ready’?

Get prepared to ‘live well’ this winter by getting your flu vaccination, maintaining good hand hygiene and staying connected with family, friends and community groups.

Flu vaccines are available at GP’s and pharmacies. Flu can be serious and is in our community. Your best protection this winter is to get a flu vaccine and stay up to date with your COVID-19 vaccinations. Talk to your GP or pharmacist for more information.

Immunisation

Immunisation is the best way to reduce your risk of contracting the seasonal flu.

With flu vaccines now available from general practices and pharmacies, people are encouraged to contact their local GP or pharmacy to make an appointment to get their flu shot.

Free flu vaccinations

The National Immunisation Program (NIP) Schedule provides free flu vaccinations to the people who are most at risk of complications from the flu. These include the following:

  • Pregnant women

  • People aged 65 years and over

  • Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people aged 6 months and over

  • People aged 6 months to less than 5 years

  • People aged 5 years and over with a medical risk

Your local immunisation provider will assess your eligibility for the free influenza vaccine. If you are not eligible for the free influenza vaccine, you can also access the influenza vaccine through a private script from your GP or from a pharmacy for people 10 years and over.

Can pharmacists provide free influenza vaccination for people 65 years and older?

Some pharmacies will have stock of the free influenza vaccine for people aged 65 years and over. Whilst this vaccine is free, the pharmacist may charge an administration fee. This fee should be discussed with the pharmacist immuniser before vaccination.
