Murrumbidgee PHN engaged Coolamon Advisors to facilitate the Cultural Awareness Training to our primary care sector. GPs, practice managers, practice nurses and practice staff working within the Murrumbidgee region are invited to attend this training to enhance skills in working effectively with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander patients.

Content
Definition of cultural safety determined by how safe Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander patients/clients feel when they use the service.
Historical, cultural, socioeconomic factors underpinning health and wellbeing, cross cultural communication and cultural safety.
Opportunity for participants to become aware of their own attitudes, perceptions and assumptions in relation to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people.
Identification of barriers to cultural safety and examples of culturally safe processes and behaviours.
Strategies for developing an ongoing relationship with local Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander community or representative groups.
National Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Health initiatives, including identification, the Close the Gap initiative, the PIP IHI and the Pharmaceutical Benefits Scheme (PBS) co-payment measure.
Strategies for implementing a culturally safe health service, including access (physical, financial, environmental, cultural), interpersonal relationships, communication and culturally appropriate procedures for assessment, referral, treatment and continued care.
Delivery
Each session will be delivered in three parts:
Completion of Pre-Learning Workbook (1 hour)*
Attendance at a Zoom webinar commencing at 6:00pm delivered by Coolamon Advisors (1.5 hours)
Completion of an action plan and evaluation post-webinar (30 mins)
*The workbook must be completed before the webinar as the information gained will inform discussion and assist you to maximise your learning

Describe Journey of an Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander patient attending a general practice and how attitudes and values can influence perceptions, assumptions, and behaviours in a clinical setting. (Explain)
Identify the Five steps towards excellence in Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Health and the importance of the 715 Check
Identify key issues facing general practice in the provision of culturally safe health care to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people and generate ways of solving these issues. (List and Create)
Presenters
Ms Katrina Fanning PSM, Founder, Coolamon Advisors. A Wiradjuri woman who brings vast experienced to the team in the areas of complex service delivery and Indigenous specific program delivery for Government. Katrina has led cultural capability development across several Commonwealth delivery agencies.
Ms Nevada Brown, Culture and Capability, Coolamon Advisors. A Ngunnawal woman with years of experience in presenting on Aboriginal culture, facilitating and delivering learning programs. She brings a unique perspective from the grass-roots, traditional owners and community expectations. She delivers programs that provide immediate back to work benefits to our participants.
