Family doctors: the heart of healthcare

World Family Doctor Day, this Friday 19 May, highlights the vital role and contribution of general practitioners (GPs) and primary care teams in healthcare systems worldwide.

This year’s theme, ‘Family Doctors, the Heart of Healthcare’, addresses the crucial role GPs play in promoting the health and wellbeing of individuals and communities; their dedication, compassion, and expertise making them a trusted source of support for patients and families.

Acting Murrumbidgee Primary Health Network (MPHN) CEO Narelle Mills said GPs are often the first point of contact for patients, providing comprehensive care that plays a pivotal role in promoting health and wellbeing in the Murrumbidgee.

“GPs in regional, rural and remote areas are especially important in our lives, as they may take care of us in a wide variety of settings including private clinics, hospital and healthcare facilities, as well as in emergency situations,” Ms Mills said.

“World Family Doctor Day is an opportunity for us to say thank you to every GP, practice nurse and practice staff member in the Murrumbidgee.”

Wagga Wagga general practitioner and firsthealth Board Chair Dr Jodi Culbert said GPs act as the central hub of patient care, connecting patients with other specialists and healthcare providers for comprehensive treatment.

“GPs are the link that holds it all together, building strong relationships with their patients, and coordinating their care across different healthcare settings,” Dr Culbert said.

“GPs also play a vital role in promoting health and wellness by educating and empowering our community to live healthy lives; which is why we’re currently reminding people to get their influenza and COVID-19 vaccinations.

“We’re here if you become unwell, but we also want to help you be proactive in your own wellbeing to live your best, healthiest, life.”

You can book a flu shot vaccination with your GP or pharmacist now.
